Green Ribbon Schools is a national award program coordinated by the U.S. Department of Education, which recognizes both K-12 schools and higher education institutions for their efforts in three areas: reduced environmental impact, healthy environments and lifestyles, and integrated environmental education initiatives. Each state has its own application process and Pennsylvania’s application is now open for submissions! Applications are due to the Pennsylvania Department of Education by December 7, 2015 at 6:00 p.m.
As noted above, the Green Ribbon Schools framework consists of three pillars: reduced environmental impact (energy, water, waste, and transportation), student and staff health (indoor air quality, fitness, nutrition, and outdoor time), and effective environmental and sustainability education (interdisciplinary environmental education, STEM learning, and civic engagement). Some example questions on the application include:
* Are there any student-led energy saving campaigns in place?
* Do you have a no-idling policy and signs posted stating that all vehicles, including school buses, are to limit idling on school/district premises?
* Does your school/district have an on-site garden in which students can participate?
* Do your students have meaningful outdoor experiences at every grade level?
