Our region finally seems ready to welcome spring to its doorstep! The warmer air and budding trees mean the school year will soon be winding down, but now is a great time to learn ways that we can all provide our children with healthy places to learn. As director of GBA’s Green & Healthy Schools Academy, I want to share some upcoming events hosted by us and some of our friends. Check them out below and join us!
Safer Pest Management in Schools Webinar, April 7th, 10-11 a.m., presented by Women for a Healthy Environment. Pests can be a nuisance that just won’t go away! Spraying toxic chemicals is an outdated pest management technique that usually does more harm to overall school health. Join WHE for this free webinar to learn safe strategies for controlling pests in your school. Register here.

Public Tours of Chatham University Eden Hall Campus – April 8th, 4-6 p.m., presented by Chatham University. Come hear about Chatham’s Eden Hall Campus master plan and take a tour to see how the campus is being built as a sustainable community from below the ground, up. Tour highlights include: the property’s rich history as a Heinz retreat center; high performance buildings; geothermal systems; photovoltaic and solar thermal systems; an aquaculture lab; sustainable agriculture indoor growing facilities; outdoor organic gardens; woodland hiking trails and more. Additional tour dates are May 13th, and June 10th.  Register here.

Healthy HVAC Practices Workshop, April 15th, 2-4 p.m., presented by the Green & Healthy Schools Academy. Fresh, clean air is essential for all of us to think and function, especially children. While many schools have older ventilation systems, there is still much that can be done to ensure that the systems are working as best as possible. Tim Butler of Integrated Services & Consultants will share best practices of HVAC maintenance specifically for schools, and what to think about when upgrading. School personnel can receive a full discount on the price of registration; Contact andrewe@gbapgh.org  for more info. Learn more and register here.
